In this article I discuss how to get started with Social Media Marketing?

Recently I had a very interesting conversation with a family friend. We were chatting about my being a Social Media Manager and how I helped business take advantage of the online platforms and tools.

I was reminded of one of the most important communication factors – which is L-I-S-T-E-N

So after letting her know some basic information, she said….

“Hang on. So what does a Social Media Manager do?” You see Vicky is a teacher from South Africa and so her questions relate to schools and how the education world could use a Social Media.

Vicky then went on to say, “So does a Social Media Manager organise events for say a school and then and tell others about the event? Like when there’s a school fete or a musical?”

There it was – it hit me like a freight train…I was mis-communicating and I was making the assumption that because I was using an internet “buzz word” like “Social Media Manager” and “social platforms” I believed everyone else used and understood it the same way I did?

Boy was I wrong

So I went back to and explained in a different way….

Here’s some problems or challenges

Do you know how businesses are looking for better ways to reach their prospective customers and target audience online? And how there are so many different way to do that but it can often seem difficult to connect with the right people and prospective customers

Well what I do is…

I help business find out where their target audience is online – by researching the prospective customers needs & wants. Then we figure out the best ways we can engage with them by using online video, social media. We look at which platforms work best like LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and how Google+ might benefit.

So here are some key questions:

  • If your business was looking to engage with your audience online what social media strategy do you have in place?
  • Which social platform would you use ?
  • How often would you use it?
  • What type of message do you want to be sending
So back to the story….
When Vicky and I were speaking I learnt that it was important to understand what her online experience was like (LISTENING). Only then could I speak about platforms, tools, technologies and their advantages and benefits .

So importantantly make sure you have considered:

  • Specific target audience
  • How to identify where you can find your community online
  • Where are they having conversations
  • Who are the  influential people  in the market (bloggers, etc.)
  • Learn how they went about engaging with them to generate content, awareness & engagement.
It really depends on what important to the client but necessary tasks include monitoring and managing the different accounts, status updates, tweeting and responding to tweets, uploading video and responding to comments on YouTube. Engagement planning, content creation (product or service) and reputation management.
Of course having a clear idea of why you want to use an online social platform is paramount…
