The Secret to Understanding People’s Habits

Not sure what happened to the guy who wrote “bitch” on the Starbucks cup? But knowing why the word got there could make the world a better place, so says Charles Duhigg author of The Power of Habit.

Funny I’m never used to be a big fan (or so I thought) of psychology. Perhaps it’s the word itself but.. then I saw it repackaged. Using words like persuasion or influence then it became a whole lot more interesting.

Which is why this video about understanding people’s habits and why they do things is so compelling…

As a marketer I help businesses figure out what’s important to their customers needs instead of focusing on how great they are… gone are the days of old school marketing… saying things like we’ve been around a gazillion years or we sell awesome stuff in eleventy twelve markets so you should buy our product and be cool like us

Today’s lesson comes from Febreeze, (yip I said it) apparently this one product does over 1Billion dollars in sales per year but it wasn’t always this way.

The back story to Febreeze is that even though it was scientifically proven to remove bad odours – science doesn’t make people buy… in fact they nearly dumped the idea of selling this block-buster of a product.

It’s essential to appeal to people’s emotions but if their habits get in the way of your dreams of selling then it’s game over before you start

After that we get to the Starbucks guy who wrote bitch on a customers cup (not so funny if you spent 100 million dollars on trying to make your company look awesome).. check it out and let me know what you think

Do you agree learning and knowing how to leverage the habits of others has the capacity to change the lives of others. Not read the book yet but I’ve got a feeling it’s gonna earn it’s place on my top 20 books… certainly the best video on habits I’ve seen seen

Top communication’s expert Michael Bernoff say there is no such thing as failure only feedback. And that’s exactly what I’m seeing here – leave a comment to let me know what you think ?
